Definition of Past Continuous Tense

Past continuous tense is a condition of time in which we talk about a task that has begun in past but still is continuous. Or in other words we can state that ‘an unfinished or incomplete action in the past’. Past continuous tense is used: often, to describe the background in a story written in the past tense.

Past Continuous Tense Formula

  1. For Simple Sentence

Subject + (was for singular, were for plural) + First Form of Verb with (ing) +Object

For Example: Children were playing games/ Ali was flying kite

  1. For Negative Sentences

Subject + (was not for singular, were not for plural) + First Form of Verb with (ing) +Object

For Example: Boys were not swimming in the pool / Wali was not eating cake

  1. For Interrogative Sentences

Was, were + Subject + 1st Form of Verb with (ing) + Object (?)

For Example: Was he using the mobile / were boys swimming in the pool
