Kinds of Verbs in English Grammar
English grammar has different types of verbs. Each type performs a particular function in a sentence. Students can learn them more easily by studying their definitions and examples.
1. Action Verb (فعلِ حرکت)
An action verb describes something a person, animal, or object does. The action may involve physical movement or a mental activity.
Examples:
- Hassan kicks the ball. (حسن گیند کو لات مارتا ہے۔)
- Ayesha sings a song. (عائشہ گانا گاتی ہے۔)
- I write a letter. (میں خط لکھتا ہوں۔)
- She remembers my name. (وہ میرا نام یاد رکھتی ہے۔)
Here, kicks, sings, write, and remembers are action verbs.
Action verbs can describe physical activities, such as running and jumping, or mental activities, such as remembering and deciding.
2. Helping Verb (معاون فعل)
A helping verb works with a main verb to form a tense, a question, a negative sentence, or another grammatical structure.
Common helping verbs are is, am, are, was, were, has, have, had, do, does, did, will, and shall.
Examples:
- She is reading a book. (وہ کتاب پڑھ رہی ہے۔)
- They are playing football. (وہ فٹ بال کھیل رہے ہیں۔)
- I have finished my homework. (میں اپنا ہوم ورک مکمل کر چکا ہوں۔)
- He will visit Lahore. (وہ لاہور جائے گا۔)
In the first sentence, is helps the main verb reading. In the final sentence, will helps express a future action.
3. Main Verb (بنیادی فعل)
A main verb expresses the central action or state in a sentence. A sentence may have a main verb alone or a helping verb with a main verb.
Examples:
- Birds fly.
- She cooks food.
- He is sleeping.
- They have completed the task.
In these sentences, fly, cooks, sleeping, and completed are main verbs.
A main verb gives the central meaning. Helping verbs add grammatical information, such as time or sentence structure.
4. Transitive Verb (متعدی فعل)
A transitive verb needs an object to complete its meaning. The object receives the action of the verb.
Examples:
- Ali kicked the ball.
- Sara opened the door.
- He bought a pen.
- The teacher taught English.
Ask “what?” or “whom?” after the verb to identify its object.
For example:
Sara opened what? The door.
Here, opened is a transitive verb, and the door is its object.
5. Intransitive Verb (غیر متعدی فعل)
An intransitive verb does not need a direct object to complete its meaning.
Examples:
- The baby cried.
- Birds fly.
- He laughed.
- The sun rises.
In “The baby cried,” the verb cried expresses a complete action. No direct object follows it.
Some verbs can work as transitive or intransitive verbs, depending on their use in a sentence.
For example:
- She reads a book. (Transitive)
- She reads every evening. (Intransitive use)
6. Linking Verb (ربطی فعل)
A linking verb connects the subject with a word or phrase that describes or identifies it. It does not express a direct action in the usual sense.
Common linking verbs are is, am, are, was, were, seem, become, and feel.
Examples:
- Ali is intelligent.
- Sara looks tired.
- The sky became dark.
- I feel happy.
In “Ali is intelligent,” the verb is connects Ali with the description intelligent.
7. Regular Verb (قاعدہ فعل)
A regular verb forms its simple past tense and past participle by adding -ed or -d to its base form. Some spelling changes may occur.
Examples:
| Base Form | Past Form | Past Participle |
|---|---|---|
| Walk | Walked | Walked |

Modal verbs help express the speaker’s intention, ability, or attitude.
10. Finite and Non-Finite Verbs
English grammar also divides verbs into finite and non-finite forms.
Finite verb: A finite verb changes according to the subject or tense.
Examples:
- He plays cricket.
- They play cricket.
- She went home.
